Freelance Software and Database Development Introduction
I have worked as a software developer for over 10 years and have a great deal of experience of bespoke software development from my previous role with Plymouth Marine Laboratory as a Senior IT Development Officer (1997-2011). During that time I worked on developing software for use as stand-alone applications, for web pages and also some complex macros for Microsoft Office. In addition to this I designed and developed many databases using Microsoft Access but more commonly using the MySQL and Microsoft SQL server database systems.

Desktop Application Programming
I have developed desktop applications using VB6, Java, VB.Net and Microsoft C#.Net (my preferred application programming language). Examples of my work include a software application for tracking floating buoys at sea, the Darwin Nematode Key stand-alone application & online applet for identification of Nematode worms from sea sediments, an internal contract management system as well as many smaller applications for simple data and/or textual manipulations. Interactive Web Page Development
I was formerly chief architect of the Plymouth Marine Laboratory corporate Intranet and a great many web applications associated with it. The Intranet and associated web applications were written using Microsoft technologies using C#.Net and ASP.NET with back-end MySQL and Microsoft SQL Server database systems. The Intranet brings together many sources of data, both from business systems and scientific databases. The main web applications I help design for the Intranet include an online staff photo and profile board and a web application for recording time worked by staff on different projects on a month by month basis. Along the way, I aquired skills in the following areas of interactive, data-driven web development:

Database design and development
While working at Plymouth Marine Laboratory I designed and developed databases for scientific and business needs. One database for managing scientific proposals for funding through to contract acquisition was a major development work of mine spanning many years. My primary database development tools are Microsoft Access for small desktop databases and MySQL for larger enterprise and business wide databases. I also have the knowledge and skills to design and develop databases using Microsoft SQL Server 2005/2008. I have an excellent knowledge of database querying using SQL and of designing web pages that have dynamic content generated from back-end database systems I have developed. MS Office Macro and Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) Programming
I can program complex Microsoft Office macros and VBA code for extending and adding to Microsoft Office functionality. In particular, I have skills that allow me to perform complex data manipulation in Excel or to automate repetitive tasks within any Office application (Word, Excel and Access in particular).
